What we’re about
Hey Philly singers!
If you love music, improv, and expanding the horizons of what your voice can create in community, Circle Jawn Singers (@circlejawnsingers) is the group for you!
We host regular Circle Singing gatherings, vocal improvisation games, and all-vocal/ a cappella jams for singers of all skill levels. No special musical talent or experience is required to join!
What is Circle Singing, you might ask? Popularized by vocal music legend Bobby McFerrin, Circle Singing stems from the ancient music tradition of community vocal improvisation- in practice, what is created together while Circle Singing is a spontaneous pop-up choir. Usually, a facilitator organizes a group of singers (standing in, you guessed it- a circle) and assigns repeating vocal patterns inspired in the moment that complement and build upon each other.
If you’d like to catch a glimpse of some Circle Singing magic in action, I recommend checking out some clips from the many Circle Singing accounts on IG that helped inspire CJS: @chicagocirclesinging, @ukvocalimprov, @musicadocirculo, @gaiamusiccollective etc. etc. etc.
It will be just like “Whose Line is it Anyway?”, but for choir nerds- and ALWAYS with a dash of Philly grit. 😉
Audition and judgement free, forever.
Sing with ya soon! 🎶
Yours in harmony,
Giovanna (Gio) Velino
