What we’re about
Circlesinging is a form of improvisational community singing. We draw on a variety of musical traditions, and rather than learning pre-written music – we make it up in the moment!
Circlesinging is all about letting our voices flow naturally and learning to trust our instincts. If you're a beginning singer, welcome! This is a really fun and low-stakes way to start playing more with your voice. If you're an experienced singer, welcome! We'll offer you plenty of chances to challenge and inspire your voice.
We'll build songs using small snippets of rhythm, melody, and harmony, creating spontaneous and fun music unique to that group on that particular day.
Some quick videos to give you an idea of what it's like:
- This great video showcasing the Chicago Circlesinging community is a wonderful overview of the experience! (We're located in Portland, ME though! 😄)
- A beautiful video that gives a sense of the experience, from our friends Sofia & Nick
All ages and singers welcome!

See all- Kindred Voices Retreat (September 11-14, 2025)Common Ground Center, Starksboro, VT
This community singing retreat will be held September 11-14 2025 in the beautiful mountains of Starksboro, Vermont!
There will be four different types of singing experience:
- Circlesongs are improvised and built in-the-moment, with each singer contributing their voice and imagination.
- Flow Singing intertwines music and mindfulness to unlock your voice and expand your musical journey.
- Vocal Exploration helps you learn to find joy and comfort (both physical and internal!) in your voice.
- Choral Music is a rich and deep tradition from which we can explore how a group connects and creates together.
You choose one to focus on when you register, though you'll get a taste of all of them over the course of the retreat! There will also be plenty of rest time, with complementary guided experiences (nature walks, art play, meditation, body movement, and more) to round out the weekend.
More details about the activities, venue, and registration are available at https://kindredvoicesretreat.com.
The Circlesongs thread will be led by Eileen (who you know from Circlesinging Portland!) and Paola (one of the leaders of Circlesinging Boston). We'd love to see you there!
