About us
City Mountaineering – Guided UK & International Mountain Trips from London
We’ve taken thousands of Londoners in expeditions across the UK & International mountains over the years — safely, confidently, and in small groups.
## Small-Group Mountain Adventures from London
City Mountaineering organises professionally planned, small‑group mountain hiking trips from London to Snowdonia, the Lake District, Scotland and further afield to Kilimanjaro, The Himalayas and The Andes
If you live in London and want to explore the most spectacular mountains around the world — without worrying about logistics, navigation, or finding the right people — you’re in the right place.
***
## What We Do
We run guided mountain expeditions every month, taking care of:
- Transport from London for UK trips (train and road transfers)
- Accommodation
- Route planning and mountain navigation
- Qualified, experienced mountain leadership
Groups are intentionally small (typically max 8 people) to keep trips safe, friendly, and personal.
Our members are usually:
- London-based professionals
- Solo hikers or pairs
- Curious, capable, and community‑minded
- Ranging from confident beginners to experienced walkers
You don’t need to come with friends — most people don’t.
***
## Is This Group Right for You?
This group is for you if:
- You want real mountain experiences, not crowded coach tours
- You prefer small groups and a supportive atmosphere
- You like the idea of building confidence over time
- You want clear information about fitness levels and expectations
This group may not be right if:
- You’re looking for ultra‑cheap mass trips
- You only want city walks or casual strolls
- You’re unwilling to follow safety guidance in the mountains
***
## New to City Mountaineering? Start Here 👇
If you’re new, we strongly recommend starting with one of:
- A London intro talk or social
- A **shorter UK trip with our other MeetUp group: https://www.meetup.com/citymountaineering/**
These are relaxed, low‑commitment ways to:
- Meet the guides
- Ask questions about fitness and experience
- Understand how our longer expeditions work
***
## Safety, Experience & Trust
City Mountaineering has been running trips for many years and has taken thousands of people into the UK mountains.
Safety is central to everything we do:
- Conservative decision‑making in poor conditions
- Careful route choices
- Clear communication about fitness and kit
- Small groups with individual attention
You’ll always know what’s expected before you book.
***
## How to Join a Trip
- Browse upcoming events on Meetup
- Read the event description carefully
- Ask questions in the comments — we’re happy to help
- Follow the booking link provided in the event
Places are limited and trips often fill up.
***
## A Note on Community
This is an active, real‑world community — not just an events listing.
We encourage:
- Asking questions
- Commenting on events
- Coming to socials even if you’re unsure about trips yet
If you’re dreaming about the mountains while living in London, this group exists for you.

ITINERARYSaturday:
At 11am:- Collection from Inverness airport/train station, drive to the trail head at Oykel Bridge to begin the journey
From 1pm (10km):
- We will begin this stage walking along the River Oykel – famed for its abundance of wild Salmon – where you will set up your first camp of the trip next to the river
Sunday (15km):
- We make our way through the glen, under the twin Munro peaks of Ben More and Conival where we will find a suitable camping spot based on the weather that day (up high for sunset/sunrise maybe?)
Monday (20km):
- A slightly longer day as we head to one of the most beautiful and remote areas of the UK – with isolated mountains scattered across the otherwise flat landscape filled with lochs and moors. The day will end with a wild camp amongst the dramatic scenery of our surroundings.
Tuesday (15km):
- Today we hike around the shores of two interconnecting lochs before pitching camp on the shores of the loch.
Wednesday (15km):
- The day begins with a hike on good tracks over a hilly pass before descending to the next valley. The terrain gets a little trickier (although flat, it’s rather boggy) as we head across the moorland to our remote campsite on the lower slopes of Arkle.
Thursday (20km):
- We continue along the moorland before reaching the road. Pleased with the solid ground, we will hike a long section of the rough road (stopping at a café for lunch on the way) and on to the remote and spectacular Sandwood Bay. this pristine beach, with crystal clear waters will be our home for the night and we camp on the sandy shores.
Friday (20km):
- Our penultimate day hiking day will see us continue along the rugged coastline of the far north-west, ending at the famous lighthouse at Cape Wrath. We will spend the night camping above the cliffs of this wonderfully remote location, celebrating with a wine, or two as we watch the sun set from the most north-westerly point on the British mainland.
Saturday (20km):
- Our final day hiking will be along a well paved military track. We will head east towards the village of Durness (catching the ferry for the short river crossing) and to our hostel accommodation for the night. After a well earned shower we will have a barbecue and beers to celebrate our achievement and our final night on the trail.

Skye Base Camp: Hiking, Scrambling and Wild Camping
Inverness Airport, Inverness, GBA long weekend of wild camping and scrambling the sections of the famous Cuillin Ridge on The Isle of Skye!
Hike into the middle of the mountains, set up camp and start exploring!
Our Base Camp Series offers you the chance to experience camp life and to explore remote mountain areas that would be hard to reach in a day or a weekend. The exact location of the base camp will be determined by the weather and conditions but on this trip we'll be heading deep into the Isle of Skye's Cuillin mountains.
The Isle of Skye is truly one of the UK's most beautiful, unique and wild landscapes and on this trip you'll have the chance to really immerse yourself in it. Both the white-tailed sea eagle and the golden eagle are common sights in the island's skies and its one of the best places in the UK to see otters.
You'll start the trip by boarding a boat that'll take you right into the wild heart of the island. You'll then hike in deeper still before setting up camp. Home for the next three days and two nights!
From the base camp you'll be able to explore the lesser known parts of the mountain range, travelling light as you leave what you don't need at camp. Each evening will be spent dining al fresco as the sun goes down, sharing a drop of wine or a dram of whiksy with your camp mates.
🗻 Spectacular mountain walks - Scramble to the summit of the Jagged Cuillin mountains;
🏝️ Coastal scenery - from beaches to cliff-tops that are remarkable but almost unvisited;
🐬 Wildlife watching - From Sea Eagles to Dolphins

ITINERARY
Please note that the exact itinerary/camp location will be dependent on the local weather conditions.
Below is an example itinerary:Thursday (10am): You will be met at Inverness train station/airport by your guide and driven on to the Isle of Skye.
You'll board small boat that will transport you into the heart of the Cuillin mountains before hiking deeper into the wilderness where you will set up base camp. You'll be carrying all our kit in but the pace will be relaxed and there'll be plenty of chances to stop and take in the breathtaking scenery.
One we've set up camp, there will be time to relax as you eat an al fresco dinner, sip wine and bask in the wildness of it all before retiring to the warmth of your sleeping bags.Friday: There'll be time for a relaxed breakfast before leaving camp to head out on a day hike and scramble up a nearby mountain with a traverse on a section of the mighty Cuillin Ridge!
Having a base camp means we can travel light, carrying only what we need for that day, and our remote camp will give us a chance to explore the less well-known and rarely climbed peaks.
It'll be back to base camp in the late afternoon for a cup of tea and a chance to relax around camp and take in the surroundings, keeping our eyes peeled for sea eagles soaring above and otters playing in the lochs.
Saturday: The journey back to civilisation. After having breakfast and coffee and packing up camp, you'll hike out of the wilderness (taking a different route to the one we hike in on), scrambling around the rocky coastline and back to our waiting transport.
There'll be a chance to shower at that night's accommodation before celebrating our return from the wild with dinner at a local traditional pub.
Sunday: You'll be driven back to the train station/airport to begin your journey back home. If there's time, we may even stop a local distillery on our for a quick tour and chance to buy some souvenirs. Expect to arrive Inverenss airport at around 2pm.
