What floral scents do you pick up in a glass of wine? Some wines practically smell like a bouquet—others, not so much. There are grapes that are naturally more aromatic than others… but does that make them better? Maybe. Maybe not. Sometimes subtle is the whole point. You might assume whites are always more aromatic than reds—but that’s not entirely true. A well-made red can give you violets, rose petals, even lavender. And yes, the right glass can make those aromas bloom or disappear. And while we’re here—just because it’s rosé doesn’t mean it smells like roses. (Sorry. Had to say it.) With the Bloomia Tulip Festival wrapping up this weekend, we figured… why not keep the flowers going? La Selva Sangiovese Bianco Toscana Italy 2023 100% Sangiovese. Aromas of rose water, grapefruit, and citrus zest. Traditionally associated with Chianti and red wines of Tuscany, this is an example of the Sangiovese grape vinified as a white wine.
Encostas Do Lima Rose Vinho Verdhe Minho Portugal NV 75% Souzao, 15% Borracal and 10% Espadeiro. Aromas of strawberry, raspberry, and red currant with notes of citrus, watermelon, and a light floral lift. Flavors of strawberry, red berry lemonade, and raspberry layered with citrus zest, melon, and a subtle hint of tomato leaf and minerality.
Fossil Point Grenache Rose San Luis Obispo California 2025 88% Grenache, 8% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre. Provençal aromas and flavors of cherry blossom, strawberry, raspberry, and watermelon, citrus lemon, blood orange, sour zest grapefruit, and grape candy. Refreshing medium plus acidity, balanced by medium fruit intensity on the palate. Dry, medium light body style.
Gimenez Mendez Alta Reserva Tannat Canelones Uruguay 2020 100% Tannat. Aromas of black cherry, black plum, blueberry-bramble, earthy, vanilla, neutral oak, iron, black pepper. On the palate flavors of blossom, red currant, strawberry, tomato leaf, and blackcurrant leaf. Flavors of blackberry, black cherry linger finish.
