Boston Public Library Photo Meetup — McKim Building
Details
Join us for an intimate architectural photography meetup at one of Boston’s greatest civic landmarks: the Boston Public Library’s McKim Building in Copley Square.
We’ll explore and photograph several of the building’s most visually striking spaces, including:
- The Bates Hall main reading room, with its monumental scale and rhythmic symmetry
- The grand entrance staircase, ideal for wide-angle and compositional studies
- The ornately decorated hallways and corridors, rich in murals, arches, and detail
- The central courtyard, inspired by Renaissance cloisters and perfect for light, geometry, and atmosphere
Attendance is limited to 10 photographers to keep the experience relaxed, respectful, and conducive to careful shooting.

### 🏛️A Brief History
Opened in 1895, the McKim Building was designed by the renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, leading figures of the American Renaissance movement. Inspired by European classical libraries and palaces, the building was conceived as a “palace for the people,” emphasizing beauty, learning, and public access. Its Beaux-Arts design, murals, inscriptions, and craftsmanship make it one of the most significant library buildings in the United States.

### 📷 What to Expect
- Quiet, observational photography in an active public space
- Emphasis on architecture, interiors, light, and composition
- No tripods (library rules apply)
- Suitable for any experience level in photography - we'll help you with whatever you need.
- Suitable for mirrorless, DSLR, and phone photographers
This meetup is ideal for photographers interested in architectural detail, historic interiors, and classical design in one of Boston’s most photogenic indoor locations.
Because of the nature of the Library, we're limiting this meetup to 10 people.
### Public Transportation
Parking in the Copley Square area is expensive, and traffic is a pain. Fortunately, the Copley Station on the Green Line brings you right to the Library.
After the formal Meetup, for those who would like to, we will have lunch at a nearby location with a moderately-priced menu.
We're looking forward to photographing this extraordinary building together.
