What we’re about

A “civic nation” is defined by its political institutions, which aim to uphold the liberal values of freedom, equality, and individual rights. Membership in a civic nation is open to every citizen by citizenship, regardless of ethnicity, religion, wealth, or education level. Those who share the value to uphold the nation’s democratic institutions are considered members of the nation. Proponents of civic nationalism understand that democratic institutions require a common identity in order to function optimally. Civic Nationalists also understand that a common identity secures individuals for leading meaningful, autonomous lives.

My name is Justin Carmien. During my 10 years living in Denmark, I learned the value of civic nationalism. I returned to the United States over 2 years ago; I saw a need to bolster American democratic infrastructure through localism. Chicago became my canvas. This group exists to promote the idea of a civic nationalism and promote democratic participation beyond electoral vote.
