Street Level Mapping of Tree Canopy for Heat Response
Dan Joseph at American Red Cross and Civic Tech DC will discuss his project to automate mapping of tree canopy cover from street level imagery (SLI). This allows exploring city areas that might be at greater risk during future heat waves for green and nature-based solutions for climate adaptation.
Using Open Data and Planting Trees to Address DC Heat Islands
Michaila Musman at Casey Trees will present on how the District's trees act as important urban infrastructure to mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect. Using DC's OpenData portal, Michaila will demonstrate how disparate data sources can be used to prioritize communities that need the benefits of trees the most.
3D Urban Heat Mapping of DC Through Citizen Science
Juan Pablo Hurtado and Eric Hackathorn will review how the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), working with partner CAPA Strategies, developed and supports a process for cities to conduct a volunteer-based, community science field campaign that engages residents in a scientific study to map and understand how heat is distributed in their communities.
These on-the-ground collected data are combined with satellite imagery, and, using a machine learning process, high-resolution maps are generated that have been used in city sustainability plans, public health practices, and urban forestry efforts.
Note - Groups are still welcome to come work on their projects if they like - conference rooms will stay open for that purpose.
