This one started off as a look at just whether President Trump would really abolish the U.S. Department of Education. But now, with the chainsaw aiming at almost all cabinet departments and independent agencies - and whole functions of govt - there is no choice but to expand the topic.

More details later. but basically, our mtg might try to cover -

  1. What is on the chopping block?
  2. Why are they doing this? Ideology? Corruption? Electoral advantage? Revenge?
  3. Regardless, is doing some of it objectively a good idea?
  4. Obstacles:
  5. Legality: Most broad cuts are bright line illegal, unconstitutional, or both.
  6. Congress, SCOTUS/lower courts).
  7. Public opinion. Will they object/push back? Will they even find out about it, or care if they do?
  8. Impacts: Who will get hurt and why them?

Check back here the week before our mtg for some optional backgrounders that address these and perhaps other questions. Me, I want us to home in on the ideology that says gutting basic USG functions is what this country needs AND on who could (or should) effectively push back.
