I have always thought that one of Civilized Conversation’s main objectives should be to explore root causes. The often hard to see reasons behind rapid changes to our culture, economy, and politics. The return of White nationalism to mainstream politics is one of them. IMO, it is not possible to understand the Trump Administration’s actions and the die-hard loyalty of many of its supporters (NOT nearly all 45m-50m of them, of course!) without facing the highly racialized ideology behind much of the Trump agenda.

The exact definition of white nationalism varies, and I leave you to AI yourselves silly looking it up. Two explainers are linked to below. Its core beliefs are easy to state: The USA was founded to be and must remain a white dominated country. Its white citizens deserve (but have lost) special privileges. Non-whites (as defined) must either accept some sort of subordinate status or be denied entry or ejected. The purging starts with but does not stop with non-whites that are here in violation of our immigration laws.

The evidence of White nationalist personnel and policies in the Trump Administration is everywhere. Links below provide all the details you could ask for.

A confounding issue is that calling oneself a “white nationalist” still is taboo, at least in most places most Americans get their news and opinions. Trump has disinhibited hateful rhetoric. Yet except for a few white supremist celebrities (Nick Fuentes, Tucker Carlson), few Americans think of themselves as holding such beliefs. You can many exceptions on-line. White nationalists have their own networks of websites, podcasters, magazines, and other influencers. White nationalism is often equated with “Christian nationalism,” the revived Christian right-wing theology that wants (certain) Christians to dominate U.S. culture and/or run an explicitly pro-Christian government. There is overlap, but they are not the same.

On Monday I will open our meeting with a brief definition of White Nationalism. I will try to distinguish it from white racial identity, which is the often-benign growing awareness of whiteness among many white Americans (last link explains). Then I will briefly list 10-12 major Trump Administration policies and top personnel that seem to reflect a white nationalist agenda.

Backgrounders –

What is White Nationalism?
· Long: 2020/July What is it and, since it is not a popular POV, how has it roared back into mainstream politics? Recommended, at least the Summary.
· Shorter: 2024 Southern Poverty Law Center defines white nationalism, supremacy, separatism, etc.

Trump Administration Policies –
· Recent white nationalist and openly racist policies of this Administration. 12/25. Recommended.
· Trump Pushes White Nationalist Agenda Across Multiple Fronts, 8/25. Recommended.
· Trump’s Year Of Making White Nationalism Great Again.
· Foreign policy: As we discussed recently, white nationalism is the core of the new National Security Strategy.

Key WN leaders besides President Trump –
· JD Vance. He is an open white supremacist and thinks he can ride it to the GOP presidential nomination. Why would he think white grievance is a winner?
· Stephen Miller. He can't make USA white, so blue cities are paying for his rage.
· Elon Musk is a HUGE white nationalist.

Voters -
· One POV re Trump supporters who are tired of being called racists (often they’re not being called that, but often they are). Recommended, but then also read next one.
· Wrong. Trump is selling impunity for taboo behavior, not white supremacy per se. Recommended.
· OTOH - A more optimistic take. White supremacy is a dying gasp. Demographics mean whites are becoming a “normal minority,” that soon will use normal politics to advance their interests. Recommended.
