How will the Democratic Party rebuild, and what will it stand for?
Details
By the time we meet on June 15th, most U.S. primary elections will be over. A few major states hold later primaries, like New York, Colorado, Michigan, Virginia, and Florida. But we should still have a pretty good idea of which way the wind is blowing.
Particularly inside the Democratic Party. You know, the party that wins a majority of the votes in most elections but that is as completely frozen out of power as any political party in the lifetime of anyone in this discussion group.
(The Republicans hold primaries, too. But I doubt there will be much to say. President Trump rules the party unchallenged, even if sometimes his preferred candidates down-ballot lose. Congress obeys him. The Supreme Court does what he wants 90% of the time. State and local GOP chapters are MAGA all the way down. It is a party dominated by its MAGA wing. Period.)
Maybe it is a too early to discuss 2028 and the longer-term future of the Democrats. But, in addition to many elections, a lot has been written and said already about what the Democrats should do to win back some levers of power. And what to do if they do so.
We could discuss what the Democrats' main message should be. Usually, those debates are about whether they should focus on (a) we will end and investigate the grotesque Trump corruption and restore the rule of law and democracy vs. (b) we would make your lives better" [abundance] messaging.
Check back here the week before the mtg for some rip-roaring analyses of how Democrats could
-- Rebuild public trust in the Party.
-- Get out the vote and/or persuade gettable undecided voters.
-- Combat the voter suppression and steal we all know are coming, and
-- Make room for a new generation of leaders and voters that might take the Party in new directions.
