We'll talk about Vassily Grossman's epic novel Life and Fate. In this initial session, we'll cover the first 400 pages.

Written by war journalist and novelist Vassily Grossman, Life and Fate is a heart-wrenching epic centered on WWII and the Battle of Stalingrad. Grossman draws on his frontline reporting and his perspective as a Jewish Ukrainian to create a deeply accurate portrayal of WWII. He carries you through scenes inside a German concentration camp, the world of a Russian intelligentsia family, the life of an independent Soviet woman, the secrets of Soviet political power, and countless other settings.

Grossman offers insight into his personal life, including the fate of his mother, who died in a Nazi concentration camp. Grossman invites you to observe and empathize with hundreds of characters whose lives are destroyed by totalitarianism within Russia and Germany.
