JERRY SAYS: This is my FAVORITE Marx Brothers movie and I've seen them all MULTIPLE times! This movie was out of circulation from 1956 to 19784 due to legal disputes. When I watched it for the 1st time at a local theater, I was afraid to laugh for fear of missing the next line--HA! Don't miss Groucho breaking the 3rd wall for 3 surreal sililoques and Harpo's political incorrectness in handling a disagreement with a woman!

In addition to featuring the irreplaceable Margaret Dumont, look for my favorite Marx Brothers ingenue, Lillian Roth, whom I had only known of from the Susan Hayward weeper, I'll Cry Tomorrow (1955), about her sad, alcoholic life.

Filled with comedy sketches, musical numbers and plenty of gags, ANIMAL CRACKERS is the first film to truly capture the Marx Brothers’ anarchic spirit and remains one of their most quotable works. Groucho stars as the original Captain Spaulding—decades before the name was repurposed by Rob Zombie for a murderous clown. Spaulding is a famed African explorer being honored at a high society party at the estate of Mrs. Rittenhouse (ur-dowager Margaret Dumont), but mayhem and chaos ensue after a valuable painting disappears and Spaulding, along with the Professor (Harpo), Signore Emanuel Ravelli (Chico) and Horatio (Zeppo) “help” search for it. Highlighted by musical performances including “Hooray for Captain Spaulding,” which would later become the theme song to Groucho’s popular TV series You Bet Your Life, ANIMAL CRACKERS may just be Groucho’s finest hour.

The film will be preceded by a Groucho Marx pre-show starting at 6:30 pm.
