Is it possible to drop our ideological swords and use rational skills to understand opposing viewpoints? I believe so. We can demonstrate this commitment to truth and reason via civil debates aimed not to win, but to understand.
How do we do this? We keep it simple and we keep it structured. Follow the basic structure of argumentation: claim (or counter-claim), reasoning, and evidence.
How do we test our commitment to truth and reason? One way is to test our ideals by engaging controversial topics and proving that two or more people of differing viewpoints can reason together. This would involve the unpleasant task of admitting faults in reasoning and revising/eliminating prior claims.
Let's prove that in this heated political context rational minds can still have civil conversations.
