Fanny: The Other Mendelssohn is a powerful documentary that reclaims the legacy of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, a brilliant 19th-century composer whose genius was sidelined by a world that refused to take women seriously. While her brother Felix rose to fame, Fanny wrote over 450 works—many unpublished, and some even wrongly credited to him.
Directed by her descendant Sheila Hayman, the film follows the rediscovery of Fanny’s stunning Easter Sonata, long misattributed to Felix. Performed by rising star Isata Kanneh-Mason, the documentary intertwines history, music, and a fierce feminist lens to ask: how many women like Fanny have we forgotten?
