Form and Abstraction in Neoclassical Ballet

Details

Classical ballet has an extremely rigorous formal language and presents us with a particular set of characters and narratives: typicallym there is a girl, there is a prince, there is a marriage -- or else a tragedy. But in the twentieth century, ballet took the ride with all other art forms and expanded its language into uncharted realms of abstraction and emotion. Along with composers such as Debussy, Stravinsky, and Copland, we'll see how dance embodied new ideas in rhythm and form. We'll also sample the fantastic world of contemporary choreographers finding gorgeously inventive ways to refresh our experience of Mozart, Bach, Rameau, and Purcell. It'll be a night of familiar tunes, with some hopefully unfamiliar artistic partners. Join our host Jennifer and feast your ears and eyes!

Instructions on how to join the meeting will be sent to confirmed attendees one day ahead.
