This concert will be performed by the Staatskapelle Dresden, one of the world's oldest orchestras, founded in 1548. They'll be joined by baritone Matthias Goerne to perform the Kindertotenlieder by Gustav Mahler and the 8th Symphony by Dvorak.
Sadness: Mahler's Kindertotenlieder
The Kindertotenlieder ( Songs on the death of children ) is a selection of several poems by Friedrich Rückert set to music. Rückert wrote the poems after the loss of his children to scarlet fever. The poems were not intended for publication and only appeared five years after the poet's death. The words and the music portray anguish, the fantasy of his children still being alive but also resignation to fate.
