When Logs Become Data: Building a PostgreSQL Logging Handler in Python
by Matt Wilson
Normally we write logs to stdout and stderr. But what if your logs could be queried alongside the rest of your application data? This talk uses logtopg as a case study for extending Python’s logging system with a custom handler that stores log records in PostgreSQL. We'll start with a crash course on logging in Python. Then we will explore the integration, database schema and indexing choices, logger hierarchies with PostgreSQL’s `ltree` extension, and the tradeoffs regarding failures and logging performance. This presentation is a practical look at making application logs searchable with SQL and deciding when database-backed logging is the right tool.
