One of there most interesting things about my local library is that it is part library and part pottery museum.

The Cowan Pottery Studio was founded in Lakewood in 1912. It moved to Rocky River in 1920, and operated until 1931, when the financial stress of the Great Depression resulted in its bankruptcy. Cowan Pottery produced both artistic and commercial work in a variety of styles influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Deco, Chinese ceramics, and modern sculpture. Several pieces are on display throughout the Rocky River Public Library.

Cowan pottery was often featured in Old Hollywood movies. Join us for a FREE fun "visual" scavenger hunt for the Cowan pieces in the 1944 film noir classic "The Woman in the Window" starring Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett and my favorite noir heavy Dan Duryea.

"The Woman in the Window" is a high-grade melodrama about Robinson meeting the subject of an alluring painting (Bennett), becoming involved with murder and witnessing his own investigation. Scripted and produced by Nunnally Johnson, this tense film noir classic was directed by Fritz Lang and is best remembered for its surprise ending.

After the screening we will peruse the library and view the numerous historic Cowan Pottery pieces on display.
