Re: [humanism-174] Winnebago Indians vs Yahweh

From: Mark T.

Even before considering the merits of each of the "thoughts", it's the Winnebago 3, Yahweh 0.

The Winnebago = real
Yahweh = fictional storybook character

1 thru 4 Winnebago = at least an attempt to address human concerns
1 thru 4 Yahweh = more stuff related to fictional storybook character

The presence of the word "ought" instead of "shalt" :)

Which is more moral?

Yes, more anthropology.  From Paul Radin's 1927 "Primitive Man as Philosopher".

The first 10 of the 24 Winnebago "thoughts on right and wrong" as he recorded them.

1.  It is always good to be good.
2. What does life consist of but love?
3. Of what value is it to kill?
4. You ought to be of some help to your fellow men.
5. Do not abuse your wife; women are sacred.
6. If you cast off your dress for many people they will be benefited by your deed. (I think this means give your clothes away.)
7. For the good you do everyone will love you.
8. Never do any wrong to children.
9. It is not good to gamble.
10. If you see a helpless old man, help him if you have anything at all.
