ποΈ Talks
1. A Manual For Scaling Environmental Sustainability In The Cloud- Niki Manoledaki (Senior Software Engineer @ Grafana Labs | CNCF Ambassador & Environmental Sustainability TAG member)
The IEA estimates that data centers consumed 1.5% of global electricity in 2024. This talk will present tooling and community efforts that have emerged in response to this in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation & Green Software Foundation, including Kepler for energy monitoring, Karpenter for autoscaling, and KEIT for measuring the carbon intensity of software using cloud native tools. We will discuss emerging trends and challenges with monitoring carbon and energy at scale.
2. Don't thank the AI - Almudena Vivanco (Principal βPringaOpsβ Performance @ SCRM - Lidl International Hub)
We will present an overview of the Schwarz Group's environmental and sustainability initiatives, prominently featuring its retail divisions, Lidl and Kaufland.
Within the new initiatives involving the development of AI, we will illustrate the Schwarz Group's core business areas: retailing, recovery and recycling, producing, and digitalising. The company's vision concerning people, product quality, circular systems, and ecosystems, along with specific goals like reducing plastic packaging and using recycled materials from PreZere, and LidlPlus Strategy to reduce carbon print in Azure Cloud, aiming for net-zero emissions in 2050.
3. Greener Observability: A Journey Toward Sustainable Monitoring Through Open Source Innovation - Diana Todea (Developer Experience Engineer @ Victoria Metrics)
When choosing observability platforms, we seldom consider their carbon footprint or environmental impact. But sustainability isnβt just about reducing financial costs, itβs also about minimizing data bloat, selecting efficient tools, and reducing energy consumption across our systems.
This talk explores the principles and practical benefits of green observability. Iβll look at how open source observability projects are raising awareness of carbon impact and enabling more sustainable monitoring practices. Iβll provide use cases where energy efficiency, reduced storage requirements and system reliability go hand in hand, taking as example the open source project VictoriaMetrics.
By aligning observability with the Green Software foundation's principles, attendees will gain a clear understanding of how green observability fits into the broader sustainable software strategy and how it can be implemented today for both environmental and operational impact.
4. TBD - Alberto Soto (Senior Software Engineers @ Grafana Labs)
See you there π
