From free-kicks to git commits (Steve Wade)
Join me as I share my unconventional journey from professional footballer to technology, specifically focusing on building self-service platforms for developers on Kubernetes. This talk will chart the course of my career transformation, highlighting the pivotal moments that led me from the sports field to the tech field. Starting with my initial passion for football, I will delve into the lessons of teamwork, discipline, and strategy that I carried into my tech career. The transition could have been more straightforward, but it was filled with challenges, learning curves, and the relentless pursuit of personal and professional growth. As we dive into the tech part of my journey, I'll share how I discovered Kubernetes and why I chose to specialise in building developer self-service platforms. I'll explore the parallels between orchestrating a winning football team and orchestrating containers and services in a cloud-native environment. Whether you're a tech enthusiast, a developer looking to enhance your skills in Kubernetes, or someone considering a career pivot, this talk will provide valuable insights and inspiration. My journey underscores the idea that there is always time to chase a new dream, and the skills and experiences you accumulate can open doors to unexpected opportunities. Join me as we explore the intersection of passion, resilience, and technology in the pursuit of building innovative solutions on Kubernetes
Steve Wade was one of the founding engineers at KSOC, a Kubernetes security startup. Before this, Steve held Platform leadership roles at UnderWrite Me and Mettle. During these roles, he leveraged the concept of GitOps to provide self-service platforms to developers. He has also provided Kubernetes consultancy and training worldwide as a Consultant at Apprenda. Steve has held leadership roles in many verticals, including real estate, gaming, and the UK parliament. Steve has a BSc in Computer Science and is passionate about cloud-native software development and distributed computing. He can be found as @swade1987 on Twitter and GitHub.
Platform & DevOps practices (Stephen Perera, JustEat)
The Data Platform team brings DevOps practices to a self service platform by following the technical practices within DORA (https://dora.dev/devops-capabilities/#technical). This is the story of how adherence to the capabilities within DORA allows the JET Data Platform team to manage a data platform at scale.
Stephen started out in hosting in the 2000s. In the 2010s he moved on to private clouds, automating both the cloud itself and the application stacks running on them. Moving on to public cloud he helped retailers move out of datacentres and to take advantage of new technologies like Kubernetes. In the 2020s he started working with JET and applying DevOps principals to cloud networking, data platform and ML platform.
Cost Conscious Cloud Native Engineering (Alex Tasioulis, Cloudified)
The Cloud promised cost savings and efficiency through "elasticity”. Systems that are complex, inflexible, and resistant to elasticity (in short: not cloud native) miss out on the cost benefits of the cloud. Cloud native SDLCs must involve understanding of short term and long term cost ramifications of engineering practices and decisions.
Alex has experience in various engineering roles including devops, platform, backend, database, and more. In the last few years he has been helping businesses reduce their cloud bills by improving cost visibility and enabling engineers to build systems as efficiently as possible.
