CloudAustin: The remote edition
Details
This month, we'll host a remote meetup themed around being "Remote"! We'll have announcements, followed by a talk about remote communication by our very own Laura Santamaria, and then do an open space on the challenges you've been seeing working remotely, what's been going well, how you're coping, and anything folks want to talk about!
We'll kick off at 6pm like our usual time, so don't be late! Also, when joining the zoom call, please use your real name, so I won't be suspicious that you're trying to zoomjack the meeting.
Talk: Communication across Remote and Distributed Teams
Abstract: Right now, we're all trying to communicate in a remote manner. Does everyone realize that the rules are a bit different, or are folks trying to use the same communication strategies they would have used in person with remote and distributed teams? Even for people who are used to working remotely, this situation is unexpectedly different. Let's explore how communication across remote and distributed teams is different than in-person team communication, why these differences arise, and what teams and individuals can do to improve communication in this time of full-time remote work.
Laura's Bio: As LogDNA’s Developer Advocate, Laura Santamaria loves to learn and explain how things work. She bridges the gap between external developers and SREs and internal engineering teams. Prior to LogDNA, Laura worked as a software developer at Rackspace where, among other things, she owned Deconst, an open-source documentation delivery platform, and MC’ed Rackspace’s internal technical conference. Apart from work, she helps host tech Meetups, teaches Python for Women Who Code Austin, and volunteers with DevOpsDays Austin. Outside of tech, Laura runs, plays with her dogs, throws discs, and watches clouds—the real kind.
