In Chapter 6, titled "Alienation," of her book
The Patriarchs, Angela Saini explores how patriarchal systems systematically isolate women from their own support networks, families, and autonomy to maintain control. The chapter focuses on the "darkest issues" of patriarchy, demonstrating how it functions by breaking connections to render women dependent on men.

Key reasons for the title and theme of the chapter include:

  • Patrilocality and Isolation: Saini analyzes how patrilineal and patrilocal traditions—where a woman leaves her family to live with her husband's family—intentionally alienate women from their natal support systems, rendering them vulnerable, isolated, and dependent on their in-laws.
  • Dehumanization and Violence: The chapter examines the extreme consequences of this isolation, including domestic abuse, forced marriage, bride kidnapping, and sexual bondage. This violence serves as both a method of control and a direct result of the immense power imbalance.
  • "Removal" from Support: Saini explains that the logic of oppression relies on removing individuals from their support structures. By "alienating" women from their communities and resources, patriarchal systems make resistance harder and increase control over them.
  • Historical Control mechanisms: The chapter highlights historical examples, such as ancient Athens, where women were effectively locked away in homes, alienated from public life, and legal rights.
