We'll be following the formula from our last instalment and having two presentations, the first of which will take us on a journey through refactoring legacy code by logically analysing names, and then the second will explore concurrency using Akka & Scala.

Matt Doughty (World First): What's In A Name?

Legacy code: it's not glamorous, but unless you're very fortunate, you probably spend at least some of your time working with it.

This talk aims to take the mammoth task of refactoring spaghetti code and break it down into small incremental steps, taking a unique approach based on analysing names & using them to make improvements to readability, separation of responsibilities and code coupling.

Kwabena Aning (IMG Gaming): Concurrency with Actors

The proliferation of processors with multiple cores has made it imperative that software engineers are able to write software in ways that can exploit all the resources that modern computers have made available.

This talk will focus on some of the motivation for writing concurrent software, some considerations when writing concurrent software, and finally settle on the Actor model of concurrent computing all the time giving the audience a bit of a historical context for an age old problem.
