Join the Code to Cloud community for a scenic summer hike to Chester Lake in beautiful Kananaskis! This is a great opportunity to connect with fellow tech professionals, cloud enthusiasts, and CNCF community members — all while enjoying Alberta’s mountain landscapes.
Hike Details:
- Distance: ~9 km round trip
- Difficulty: Easy–Moderate (suitable for most fitness levels)
- Time: 3–4 hours
- Highlights: Stunning alpine lake, mountain views, and plenty of photo spots.
What to Bring:
- Comfortable hiking shoes or boots
- Water & snacks/lunch
- Sunscreen, hat, and layers (mountain weather can change quickly)
- Bear spray (if you have one)
- A positive attitude and readiness to network in the wild!
Meeting Point: Chester Lake parking lot/trailhead — look for the Code to Cloud banner or a friendly group of people with coffee in hand.
- Location: Along the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail (Highway 742), about 44 km south of Canmore or 20 km north of the Kananaskis Lakes area.
- Coordinates: ~50.8339° N, 115.3325° W
- Facilities: Large gravel parking lot, washrooms (pit toilets), trailhead signage.
Driving Tip:
If you’re coming from Calgary, the fastest route is usually via Highway 40 → Kananaskis Trail → Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail. The Smith-Dorrien is a gravel road — plan extra time and watch for wildlife.
