Code for Durham: Behavioral Insights + Downtown Traffic
Details
Tonight's speaker:
Mo Devlin
Mo is a Transportation Planner for the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro (DCHC) Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).
"Can a mid-sized city – where cars are still the most convenient mode of transportation and only 8 percent of people walk or commute to work by transit or bike – get residents and visitors to choose to commute by alternative modes to downtown Durham?" Mo will be sharing about the City of Durham’s work to reduce drive alone trips. She will talk about the city's many strategies for educating citizens and encouraging alternative modes of transportation. The city's goal is to create a culture where driving alone is questioned using behavioral economics. Mo will also share how everyone can participate and how every trip is an opportunity to use an alternative!

Code for Durham is a bi-weekly project night for technologists, designers, developers, data scientists, map makers, and activists who are working on "civic technology" projects. Consider this to be a study hall or office hours to improve the city.
This night is for those who want to:
• get work done on civic projects;
• start a new project, or find one to join;
• get feedback from technical, government, or community experts; and/or
• learn about tools for local empowerment, open data, and smart and open government.
Bring your laptop, ideas, projects, maps, data, and questions.
For first timers trying to get the most out of the night, you should be sure to bring your laptop. Prior to the Meetup, you can explore www.codefordurham.com (& register) to get familiar with local resources and where you might want to plug in. You could also watch Civic Hacking 101 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH6LnW_qjeI), explore the U.S. Digital Services playbook (https://t.yesware.com/tl/fae269bee19aeb8e251ae5d887b063a941581f3a/22c9eab162496947b4067f64310ba4f7/61105d4a10f10042bff97b21011655e8?ytl=http%3A%2F%2Fplaybook.cio.gov%2F) for the basic principles we try to apply to every project, or get inspired by some of the Code for America 2015 Summit videos (https://www.youtube.com/user/CodeforAmerica/playlists) sessions with amazing speakers
