>> Transforming workflows: automating metadata processes to better support collaborative projects in the Scholars GeoPortal
Kara Handren
Scholars GeoPortal uses ISO 19115 (NAP) to describe geospatial datasets, which is an extremely detailed disciplinary standard (ie. time consuming). In 2016, a project to ingest over 1000 historical maps was undertaken, prompting changes to the way NAP metadata was created. The existing editor which relies on manual entry of each field was bypassed to instead batch-generate XML files and load them directly into MarkLogic. This was done through a combination of cleaned spreadsheets, XML crosswalks, and python scripts. This process has since been repurposed to generate metadata for other large collections, significantly reducing processing time.
>> Layers of Confusion - migrating TPL digital archives to a new platform
Kris Wawrzyniak & Donna MacLeod
Toronto Public Library is moving its digital collections from Universal Content Management (UCM), an Oracle based product, to a new, cloud-based platform run by Gallery Systems. We’ve decided to clean, standardize and reconcile our data before migration. Please join us as we share details of our adventure and reflect on some of the challenges and unexpected outcomes we’ve encountered.
