Potential Group Projects

Hey Everyone,

Our happy hour/meet and greet isn't until next Thursday (Feb, 7th) but I think we should start thinking about ideas for our group project now and can use this thread to brainstorm ideas. To keep things simple we can probably code our first project in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. For our next project we can work on building out a database driven site using either Rails, Django or PHP/MySQL.

A proposed format and suggestions for the project appear below:

Project format:

  • Languages: HTML, CSS, JavaScript/JQuery
  • Target time to completion: 5-8 weeks, depending on project
  • Materials (free online): 30 Days to Learn HTML and CSSEloquent JavaScript30 Days to Learn JQuery
  • Format: Each week before our coding sessions we'll read a couple of chapters/lessons from the above materials, starting with HTML/CSS and working our way through JavaScript and JQuery. We'll then take what we learn as we go to build out our project.

Ideas for a project suggested by the group so far:

  • Site where users can share points of interest in NYC
  • To-do app (may require some Backbone.js)
  • Ping-pong game
  • A "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire" style game
  • Pac-Man

I'm also thinking that we can have our first weekly collaborative coding session on Sunday, February 17th. This will give folks some time to go over some pre-work (thinking maybe some high-level intros to HTML/CSS and JavaScript, Git, command line basics and Sublime). If needed, we can probably schedule a meetup before the 17th to make sure everyone is up to speed on the basics so we can all hit the ground running. Maybe this meetup can also double as a project planning meeting?

Let me know what you guys think. Looking forward to hearing every one's ideas!

- Jamal
