Free Ruby on Rails Workshop for Women, Mobile Payments Hackathon and More!

From: Jamal

Hey Everyone,

There are a lot of interesting events happening in NYC over the next couple of weeks. The Coalition for Queens is hosting their Queens Tech Bash this Wednesday and as the name suggests it should be a blast so make sure you don't miss it! For all of my hackers (and newbies) out there be sure to check out CardFlight and Stripe's Mobile Payments hackathon. If you're new to coding this may be a good way to test your skills, challenge yourself and meet some cool people at the same time. If you're looking for a cool bunch to learn programming with, we kicked off our Programming Languages study group at TEKsystems last week and will be meeting every other Tuesday to complete the course thanks to our friends at the Fullstack Academy of Code.

We're also very happy to announce that we're teaming up with an awesome organization called Rails Bridge to provide a free Ruby on Rails workshop for women. There are still slots available for both students and volunteers so please sign up here if interested. We are also actively looking for sponsorships. If you are interested in being a sponsor for this event please reach out to Felicia at [address removed] for more information.

Rails Bridge x Code Crew Free Ruby on Rails Workshop for Women
Railsbridge NYC and Code Crew are happy to announce a free two-day workshop. The workshop is for women who want to learn and/or get better at Ruby on Rails in a friendly and warm environment.

The focus will be on developing functional web apps and programming in Ruby. All experience levels are welcomed and you can find the curriculum materials here. Below are details for the event.

***There are a limited number of spots available for this event. Please register via Bridge Toll to secure your spot. *****

6:00 - 9:00pm Friday, November 8th

Friday night will be the Installfest to make sure that your machine is ready to ride come Saturday. We will make sure Ruby and Rails is installed and your development environment is sufficient for you to build your first application.

9:00am - 5:00pm Saturday, November 9th

In this workshop, we'll take you through the steps to build a web application. We'll have different classes depending on experience level. Total novices can start with an Intro to Programming, while experienced programmers can jump right into Ruby and Rails. By the end of the workshop, you'll have an application on the internet that connects to a database and reads and writes information.

Student Checklist:

Required to attend both days of the session

Each participant needs to bring their own laptop.

If you have a Mac, download and install Xcode on your laptop before coming to Installfest on Friday. (Xcode is the software that creates a coding environment for you to tinker with during the workshop.)

Xcode is a very large file that takes 2-3 hours to download and cannot be done at the Installfest.

Download the version of RailsInstaller that is right for your machine. This is not as download-intensive as Xcode, but it is still wise to download ahead of the Installfest on Friday
