CoderGirls and Digital Literacy Group are thrilled to invite you for an evening where we dive into decentralized networks and protocols!

Talk description
In this presentation we learn about network architectures which challenge the very notion of the internet as we know it. Starting with a brief history of the internet into state-of-the-art networks, building on direct connections between peers, collaborative editing and the ability to switch between means of routing. With the ability to communicate over traditional internet as well as bluetooth, radio, mesh and even sneakernets, communication becomes virtually unstoppable and resilient from infrastructural blockages, all capacities which society is facing a dire need for.

About the speaker
Taking on questions of how to communicate when the internet is shut down, Zenna has spent the past 8 years working on, and researching, protocols and networks which are offline-first. Starting off with a funky yet quite popular protocol called Scuttlebutt, she is now continuing the research in the broader ecosystem of local-first and grassroots networks. With a bachelors from Kaospilots and a masters in IT & Communication she resides in the space between the deeply technical and the social organizing, which is formative in the Society and Technology lens of her research. She recently launched a podcast called Solarcast.cc where she interviews projects in the space of open-source communication networks.

Censorship resistant, adaptive, self-organizing, interoperable, mutual-aid, prefigurative practices and peer-to-peer are all words that get her going, as well as cooperative board games!
