How structured logging helps keep you out of trouble with privacy regulators

The last ten years has seen a major increase in privacy regulations that impact how we handle data. The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the most famous, but California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) disproportionately affects the tech industry due to how many of our companies are headquartered there. Data handling practices that were perfectly safe in 2011 can now land a company with major fines and a requirement to publicly admit failure.
These regulations apply to our software telemetry just as much as it does to the data our applications handle. Because GDPR classified email addresses as private information, logging statements like: "fred78@example.com logged in" are considered a leak that needs cleanup and patching. Structured logging gives us a robust way to defend our telemetry streams from private information leaking in from our production applications. This talk will demonstrate how structured loggers make it easier to keep out of trouble, and provide guidance on telemetry techniques that reduce the need for emergency cleanup operations.

About Presenter
Jamie Riedesel is a Staff Engineer with HelloSign (a Dropbox company), and is a senior part of the HelloSign Platform group. She began her career in office IT in the late 1990s, moved to a software as a service startup in 2011 (Logikcull), and has been working in the operations, platform, and CI spaces ever since. Her chief passions are maintaining distributed systems (easy) and improving feedback between the various parts of a technical organization to reduce silos and resentment, and improve the experience of having a career in this industry (hard).
