What we're about

This group is for anyone interested in learning more about their camera settings and getting out for a few hours with other like-minded early-birds, having coffee, walking together, and taking photographs of interesting things. If you would like to see a few examples, follow me on Instagram @Coffee_then_Focus. I encourage you to join the group and then go and Like the Facebook page which I have created for sharing and discussing our favorite images. https://www.facebook.com/CoffeethenFocus/

All skills levels are welcome. I started this group because I love photography. I go out exploring often. In my free time, I explore new places and practice techniques. Since street photography is not something a lot of people are into this early in the morning, I have become accustomed to being solo. I thought it was about time to change that --- meet some like-minded people who want to join.

I share freely my own experiences with photography and techniques I use and learn. I look forward to learning from others as well. This meetup is not a structured class. It is a guided group photography session.

This group is not recommended for children. This group is not recommended for people who have trouble walking on uneven surfaces or long distances. It is recommended that you bring bottled water and your camera manual.

Old Town Alexandria, Virginia - Sunrise on the Waterfront

Coffee talk is between 6:00 - 6:30 am at the Starbucks on 100 S Union Street in Alexandria. Yes, I know... It's early. We will introduce ourselves and go over some basics. We will start walking together and photographing at 6:30 to the waterfront marina/dock area in the event you are running a little late. This is a great place for getting the early sunrise shots over the water. I have included a few of these in this event. The marina is beautiful. We will practice using various depths of field. Flower pots in the foreground with stunning views in the background and vice versa. There are many unique marina details such as knots and buoys for shallow depth of field practice to create stunning images. We walk toward Mirror Mirror on the waterfront, practice some street photography against the colorfully painted brick walls on the way toward more cobblestone streets and painted doors. Wales Alley, beautifully detailed architecture along the way... There will be plenty of opportunities to capture brick architecture, painted doors, and historic homes that inspire any photographer. What to bring: Camera, batteries, memory cards Camera manual Bottled water Wear comfortable shoes Bandana or cotton towel for humidity Small travel-sized wipes are always handy We will meet at Starbucks near the water at 100 S Union Street in Alexandria, VA. This location is right across the street from the Torpedo Factory. Questions: What lens should I bring? The images included with this post were shot with 35mm. For details from the sidewalk, you may want more zoom. Anything you have is going to allow you some beautiful shots. Why do I charge? Answer: This meetup is not for everyone. It is for people who value what they are signing up for. I try to ensure that the location is appropriate by researching and scouting ahead.
