FTI: Beyond Division: Can We Unite a World That Disagrees?
Details
A Free Thinker Institute Collaborative Brainstorming Event
What if we could create a world where people with radically different beliefs, values, and perspectives could genuinely understand one another—even when they disagree?
We live in a world where disagreements too often become arguments, differences become divisions, and conversations become competitions to prove who's right.
But what if we approached disagreement differently?
What if, instead of saying, "You're wrong, I'm right, and here's why," we started asking, "Why do you believe what you believe?"
At this interactive Free Thinker Institute event, we'll explore the third of FTI's five ambitious goals: Uniting a Very Divided World.
Our vision is to foster a more united world by cultivating open-mindedness, intellectual humility, curiosity, and a culture of listening to understand—not simply listening to respond.
We often learn far more by asking someone how they reached their conclusion than by telling them why we think they're wrong.
But how can we transform this idea into a movement that meaningfully reduces division—not just among friends and neighbors, but across communities, cultures, nations, and ultimately the world?
Together, we'll brainstorm questions like:
-
Understanding division: Why do people become so attached to their beliefs that disagreements can feel like personal attacks?
-
Listening to understand: How can we encourage people to ask thoughtful questions and genuinely explore why others believe what they do?
-
Intellectual humility: How can we make changing our minds in response to better evidence something to celebrate rather than something to fear?
-
The psychology of disagreement: How do confirmation bias, tribalism, emotional reasoning, and social pressure contribute to polarization?
-
Finding common ground: How can people with vastly different worldviews discover shared values, goals, and opportunities for collaboration?
-
Disagreeing constructively: How can we challenge harmful or mistaken ideas without attacking, humiliating, or alienating the people who hold them?
-
Technology and media: How might we redesign social media, educational experiences, and AI-powered tools to reward curiosity, understanding, and constructive dialogue rather than outrage and division?
-
Thinking globally: What bold, scalable initiatives could help millions—or billions—of people develop better habits of listening, questioning, and understanding?
-
Measuring success: How would we know whether we're actually reducing harmful divisions and increasing mutual understanding?
This isn't about getting everyone to agree. It's about learning how to disagree without becoming enemies.
We'll challenge our own assumptions, examine the forces that drive people apart, and collaboratively develop innovative ideas for bringing people together.
We'll also think critically about unintended consequences. Could an emphasis on unity discourage necessary dissent? How do we foster mutual understanding without compromising our commitment to truth, evidence, human rights, or ethical behavior?
Our goal is not a world where everyone thinks alike, but one where differences become opportunities for learning rather than reasons for hostility.
Imagine a world where curiosity is more common than condemnation, where people are eager to understand perspectives different from their own, and where intellectual humility is seen as a strength.
What would it take to make that world a reality?
Come ready to question your assumptions, share your experiences, consider unfamiliar perspectives, and brainstorm ambitious ways to make open-mindedness and constructive dialogue a global cultural norm.
Because changing the world may begin with changing how we listen to one another.
In our next event, we'll explore another of FTI's five ambitious goals: Promoting Win-Win Relationships. We'll brainstorm how to create a world where personal, professional, and societal relationships are built on mutual benefit and mutual respect—where success doesn't have to come at someone else's expense, and we strive to create opportunities for everyone to thrive together.
