19:00 - General Data Protection Regulation
John Thomlinson

Our first talk is a regarding the regulation affecting all UK businesses will come into force from 25th May 2018. Regulation (EU) 2016/679 – known as the General Data Protection Regulation – broadly applies to all people and organisations that hold personal data: “The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights says that everyone has the right to personal data protection in all aspects of life”. The scope of ‘personal data’ includes “anything from a name, a photo, an email address, bank details, your posts on social networking websites, your medical information, or your computer's IP address”.

John Thomlinson is a senior manager in Fin Tech in the City of London. In this talk he looks at the rights and responsibilities involved in this new regulation, for organisations and individuals who hold data. He discusses the serious penalties that may be applied to any organisation that cannot show it is following the rules. These rules have implications for technical development, business operations, and corporate governance. John will explain the need for IT professionals to have a comprehensive understanding of what the regulation implies.

While this short talk cannot cover the full impact of an 88-page text, he will cover some important points as an overview, providing a way for businesses to address the regulation in more detail.
