About us

Where craft meets community. Let’s get published, together.
Our Mission:
Writing is often a solitary act, but the path to publication shouldn't have to be. The Open Inkwell is a supportive space for writers of all backgrounds and experience levels who want to take their short stories from a first draft to a finished submission. While we have a deep love for Speculative Fiction (SFF), we welcome writers of all genres—literary, horror, mystery, and everything in between.
Why We Are Different:
• Accessibility Over Gatekeeping: You don't need a publishing history or an MFA to be here. You just need a story and a desire to improve.
• Radical Inclusivity: We actively encourage diverse voices, queer perspectives, and experimental styles. This is a safe space for marginalized creators to tell their stories without being told they "don't fit the genre."
• Multi-Genre Growth: We believe that a fantasy writer can learn as much from a mystery writer as they can from another world-builder. Cross-pollination makes our prose stronger.
How Our Meetings Work:

  1. The "Check-In": A quick, low-pressure round-table to share what you're working on and any small wins (or frustrating blocks).
  2. Guided Feedback: We use a structured "supportive-first" critique method. We look at what is working in a story first, then offer constructive paths for growth.
  3. The Submission Lab: Every meeting includes a short segment on the business of writing—finding the right magazines, understanding contracts, and how to handle the inevitable "thank you, but no" emails.
    Who Should Join:
    • Newcomers who are nervous about sharing their work for the first time.
    • Hobbyists looking to take that first step toward a professional sale.
    • Established writers who want a more diverse and inclusive critique circle.
The Golden Rule: We critique the work, never the writer. Bring your curiosity and your courage.
