In the 25th meeting of the Cologne book club, we will be discussing The Bastard of Istanbul by Elif Shafak.

The Bastard of Istanbul is a richly layered and evocative novel that explores themes of identity, memory, and cultural legacy through the lives of two families—one Turkish and one Armenian-American. Set between Istanbul and San Francisco, the story centres on Asya, a rebellious young woman living in a house full of eccentric women, and Armanoush, her Armenian-American relative who travels to Turkey seeking a deeper understanding of her heritage.

Through these interconnected narratives, Elif Shafak deftly weaves together personal histories and political tensions, shining a light on the weight of collective memory and the unspoken traumas passed down through generations. Her writing blends humor, poignancy, and magical realism, creating a vibrant portrait of modern Turkey and the complexities of its past.

The Bastard of Istanbul is a compelling and provocative read that examines the intersections of family, culture, and history. Shafak’s storytelling is both intimate and expansive, offering readers a moving exploration of how the past informs the present—and how confronting that past is essential to healing.
