📚 Book

In the next meeting of Cologne book club, we will be discussing The Radium Girls by Kate Moore.

The Radium Girls is a powerful and haunting work of nonfiction that tells the true story of the young women who worked in radium dial factories in the early twentieth century. What began as an exciting and glamorous job soon revealed a far darker reality, as the women faced devastating health consequences from exposure to radium. Kate Moore brings their experiences to life with vivid detail, showing both the human cost of industrial negligence and the courage of those who refused to stay silent.

Moore’s writing is engaging, compassionate, and deeply researched, blending historical context with the personal stories of the women at the heart of the book. She explores themes of justice, resilience, exploitation, and the fight for workers’ rights, while also highlighting the social and scientific attitudes of the time. The book is both an intimate portrait of individual lives and a broader account of a landmark struggle that had lasting legal and ethical consequences.

The Radium Girls is an emotional, eye-opening, and unforgettable read that sheds light on an important chapter of history. Kate Moore’s storytelling makes the book both accessible and deeply moving, offering plenty to discuss about truth, responsibility, and the extraordinary strength of ordinary people.
