Game Theory and its Applications in Machine Intelligence by Dharshana Kasthurirathna

Dr. Dharshana Kasthurirathna graduated from Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Moratuwa (http://www.cse.mrt.ac.lk/) in 2004. He has over 7 years experience in ICT industry, both as a software engineer and a researcher. He holds a Master's degree in Computing from University of Colombo School of Computing (http://ucsc.cmb.ac.lk/). He obtained his PhD in complex systems from the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies, University of Sydney (http://sydney.edu.au/engineering/) in 2016. Currently he is a senior lecturer at Faculty of Computing, Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (http://computing.sliit.lk/). His research interests include complex systems, network science, computational game theory, machine learning and distributed computing.

Game theory is purported as the science of strategic decision making. Although its origins can be found in microeconomics, the principles discussed in game theory have later been adopted to other fields as well such as politics, education, evolutionary biology, computer science and even psychology. This kind of generalization is possible since strategic decision making scenarios are found in many areas of science and technology. Computational or algorithmic game theory is one such sub-field, originating from the intersection of game theory and computer science. In this talk we will have a brief look at some of the principles of game theory and how they are applied in applications in computer science and information and communication technology. Then we will go on to discuss how game theory may be utilized to enhance the theoretical interpretations and the practical applications of machine learning.
