Whitman's Burden

It is standard practice at CSWW to request that a new member fill out a premise worksheet before starting their first draft. Simply put, a premise is a "What if" statement. When the author of Whitman's Burden, Will Leitch, worked through his first draft with us, his premise was: What if an overtly-literate gold miner from the late-1800's developed a Platonic relationship with a donkey.
Sounds weird, but it turned out to one heck of a story.

To new writers, there's no reason a good book shouldn't get published. You just need two things: a mentor and a great agent.
We can satisfy the first half of the equation.
Now you can spend four years and a couple of hundred thousand dollars to get a creative writing degree, or you can learn how to write with others for free.
