Very few people would argue with an assertion that Daniel Day Lewis is one of the best actors ever. But what makes him that way? Yes, he gets the circumstances, the physical aspects, and he studies his characters. However, by living with his character (commonly called method acting) he learns what his character feels. In a novel, the character is believable when the reader knows what makes a character do what they do and WHY. Daniel Day Lewis studies WHY a character acts the way they do. WHY is what works.
