Can AI Possess Consciousness, or Does Humanity Transcend Computation?
Details
January's will be conducted by Bro. Joshua Fradenburg as he asks the question, "Can AI Possess Consciousness, or Does Humanity Transcend Computation?"
Synopsis:
From the Golem of Jewish mysticism to the automata of Greek legend, humanity has long imagined the creation of artificial life. Today, artificial intelligence brings those myths into the realm of possibility, raising profound questions about consciousness, responsibility, and what it truly means to be human. This presentation explores the development of AI and its impact on society while examining the limits of machine intelligence through the lens of philosophy, esoteric tradition, and Freemasonry. Drawing on Hermetic and perennial wisdom, we ask whether intelligence alone can ever become wisdom, whether machines can possess consciousness or soul, and what moral obligations arise if they cannot—or if they can. Framed by the Masonic ideal of the Great Work, the discussion invites reflection on how humanity may transmute information into understanding, and power into responsibility.
Mission Statement:
The Masonic Philosophical Society embraces the concept of learning, not for school, but for life, and believes that all men, who seek it, deserve access to continued education. We further embrace the concept of a community environment where ideas can be shared and debated in an open forum. From the seven liberal arts to the arcane, we seek to gain and share the knowledge that is the legacy of mankind.
