What we’re about

Our real world self-defense system has been used to protect the U.S. Secretary of Defense and  the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

From witnessing the self-defense system firsthand the U.S. Department of Defense says it is “second to none.”

“I can honestly say that Grandmaster Peter Freedman has built the best martial art teaching system that I have ever encountered.” – Jason Macdonald, Personal Defensive Tactics Instructor

"I checked out over 100 martial arts schools in Southern California before finding Sensei David Weinberg. His Jiu-Jitsu is off the hook!  Freedman’s Method Ketsugo Jiu-Jitsu is the most applicable and best martial art I’ve ever seen for street survival and street fighting. I love the approach for multiple attackers and weapons as no other schools focus on this.” – Mike Muratore, Jeet Kune Do Instructor, Wing Chun Instructor, Kyokushinkai Black Belt, Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt, and State Judo Champion

In all of our classes you’ll learn real world self-defense without taking injury.

Our self-defense system is gentle on the body and is taught in a relaxed environment where questions are encouraged and humor is appreciated. Our Meetup group consists of a mixture of seasoned martial artists and novice beginners with no prior experience. Regardless of your age, fitness level, or experience everyone is welcome as long as you’re respectful and have a desire to learn and improve while having fun in the process. The first class is FREE of charge.

Rule #1: Not taking injuries in class

Rule #2: Everything taught has to be effective against weapons and multiple attackers

In class we cover:

*Awareness Training

*Sensitivity Training

*Joint Locking

*Pressure Points & Nerve Attacks

*Rolling & Falling

*Ground Fighting

*Multiple Opponents Training

Many of our students routinely say that we demystify the martial arts and that they learn more about self-defense in 3 months than they have studying martial arts for over 20-30 years.

“I previously studied Okinawan Karate, Kenpo, and Kyokushinkai, but found myself progressing farther as a martial artist in my first few months with Freedman’s Method than in all my other years of martial arts practice.” – John Moore, Martial Arts Instructor, Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, and Internet Consultant

“Over the years I have studied Krav Maga, Muay Thai, Boxing, Street Survival, and ITS (Israeli Tactical System). After being in the Army I was recruited to work as an instructor with a Counter-Terrorism training school, where I trained United States Special Forces, Rangers, Spec Ops teams, Police S.W.A.T, etc. For a long time I felt that I had good level of knowledge in various styles of martial arts. That was until Sensei Dave Weinberg introduced me to Ketsugo Jiu-Jitsu and Peter Freedman’s method of teaching. I experienced a paradigm shift and my perception of what was an effective way to learn and to teach was completely changed. If I had started in this style my learning in every other style would have gone up exponentially, because I would have understood the principles of why the style worked instead of just being given preset techniques to regurgitate.” – Jared Day, Actor and Motivational Speaker

Although not required we strongly suggest watching our introductory real world self-defense video lessons prior to attending your first Real World Self-Defense Meetup class. This will allow you to get the most out of your first class and will open your mind up to strategies for defending against a bigger assailant, multiple attackers, weapons, and defending yourself in cramped and awkward spaces such as elevators, stairwells, and your car.

You can access the real world self-defense intro videos FREE of charge:

You just need to enter your email address to view the private intro video link.

Should you later decide that the Real World Self-Defense Meetup is a great fit you may wish to sign up for our online Combat Science self-defense video program. Sensei David J. Weinberg and Grandmaster Peter Freedman created the online program to exponentially accelerate students’ learning curve and save them a tremendous amount of money in the process. As a member of Combat Science you can then take advantage of 50% off all LA Real World Self-Defense Meetup classes. We are here to help however we can.

Sensei Weinberg personally teaches all of the LA Real World Self-Defense Meetup classes  at the Westwood Park at 11 a.m. on Saturdays. He is a 4th degree black belt in Freedman’s Method Ketsugo Jiu-Jitsu and for over 18 years he studied directly under the founder of the art, Grandmaster Freedman. Sensei Weinberg has taught self-defense to a wide variety of clients from novice beginners to black belts to night club bouncers to instructors in JKD and Wing Chun to champion competitors in full contact “Tough Men” tournaments. He has taught restraint scenarios and close quarter hand to hand combat to members of the LAPD, South Carolina law enforcement, U.S. Marines, U.S. Army, and U.S Army Rangers.
