This is the fifth presentation in our series on Japan’s World Heritage Sites, and this time we turn to Okinawa. The prefecture is home to two types of World Heritage: cultural and natural. In the first section, we will look at the cultural sites and explore the historical background that shaped them.
The second category is natural heritage. Okinawa is home to a number of unique species, many of which are now classed as endangered. We will introduce several of these species and consider how such distinctive forms of life came to evolve.
We will also take a look at the seas of Okinawa, one of the region’s most
captivating attractions. Finally, we will touch on the situation Okinawa faces today.
