The author is Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (1850–1904).
He was born in Greece to an Irish father and a Greek mother.
He resided in Japan from 1890 until his death.

He collected Japanese legends and ghost stories from his Japanese wife, Setsu.
Based on a Japanese legend, he wrote this ghost story.
