About us

Welcome to The Common Thread: St. Pete’s Yarn Shop & Café! 🧶☕

We’re a brand-new local fiber-arts hub bringing together knitters, crocheters, weavers, embroiderers, rug-tufters, and makers of every kind. Our shop features a curated selection of high-quality yarns and tools, plus a full-service espresso bar to keep your creativity flowing.

Through this Meetup group you’ll find both free socials and ticketed workshops: from casual knit-nights and crochet circles to hands-on classes in embroidery, weaving, rug tufting, and more. Whether you’re a total beginner or a lifelong maker, you’ll find inspiration, guidance, and a warm community of fellow fiber lovers.

Bring your projects, share your skills, or simply sip a latte and soak up the good fibes. ✨

We can’t wait to stitch, sip, and create with you!

Friday Scrappy Hour: Knit, Crochet, Stitch & Sip at The Common Thread!

The Common Thread Yarn Shop & Café, 2462 5th Ave S, St. Petersburg, FL, US

Join us for Friday Scrappy Hour, every Friday from 6pm-9pm!

This weekly social is all about community, creativity, and connection. Bring your project, get support, and meet fellow fiber-loving friends. Come knit, crochet, embroider, needle felt and more - if your craft is fiber related and considerate of table space, it’s welcome!

IMPORTANT UPDATE, PLEASE NOTE: If you are planning on attending, you must get your ticket on our website. RSVPing “Yes” on Facebook or Meetup does not reserve a space for you, and this event often sells out. We have a strict maximum capacity and we hate turning anyone away who wants to craft with us, so please grab your tickets in advance (even 5 minutes before the event is fine). Remaining tickets for the night are sold at the door if available, on a first come, first served basis.

    Details:

    • We have comfortable indoor seating for 20. Seating is first come, first served. If you’re coming later and want to be sure you have a comfy spot, feel free to bring a folding or camp chair! We also have a covered picnic area on our patio.
    • $10 admission includes $5 off any cafe beverage (BYOB for anything 21+).
    • Bring a couple bucks to tip your hardworking baristas - it is much appreciated!
    • Forever Thread Members get in free, but must still reserve a ticket in advance so we can get a headcount.
    • If you can no longer make it, please let us know so we can offer your spot to another stitcher
    • Shop will be open if you’d like to browse yarn & supplies
    • Kids under 16 are welcome with with a supervising adult; each attendee must reserve a seat
    • Please leave pets at home (service animals always welcome)
    • Parking lot is on the east side of the building in the Rad Power Bikes / Golfology shopping center.

NOTE: Walk-In registrations for Scrappy Hour are possible if we are not already sold out online. We appreciate you registering in advance!

Intro to Sock Knitting: 3-Part Class Series

The Common Thread Yarn Shop & Café, 2462 5th Ave S, St. Petersburg, FL, US

    Sundays: 4/19, 4/26, 5/3 • 2–3:30PM
    Instructor: Maryellen
    $75 for all three sessions
    Learn More & Register Here!

Ready to knit your first pair of socks? This three-part beginner series is designed to take you from cast-on to finished pair, one step at a time.
Over the course of three weeks, you’ll learn the full sock-making process in a supportive, hands-on environment.

Each session focuses on a different section of the sock:

    • Week 1: Casting on + knitting the ankle
    • Week 2: Turning the heel (the part everyone’s scared of…we’ve got you)
    • Week 3: Shaping the toe + finishing techniques

By the end of the series, you’ll not only have a completed pair of socks, but the skills and confidence to keep making more.
Maryellen is known around the shop for her clear, patient teaching style and her ability to make even the trickiest techniques feel approachable.

    Materials:

    • 1–2 skeins of Malabrigo Mecha (depending on desired sock length)
    • 9” circular needles + DPNs in a size appropriate for your yarn
(We carry both yarn and needles in-store, but inventory is limited so plan ahead!)

    Prerequisites:
This is a beginner sock class, but not a beginner knitting class. Students should already know how to:

    • Cast on and bind off
    • Knit and purl comfortably
    • Work in the round (highly recommended)
    • Maintain consistent tension

No prior sock experience needed, we’ll guide you through heel turns, gussets, and toe shaping step by step.

  • Soap Sack Social + Yarn Drive

Soap Sack Social + Yarn Drive

The Common Thread Yarn Shop & Café, 2462 5th Ave S, St. Petersburg, FL, US

What if a ball of yarn and a bar of soap could directly impact someone’s life?

This Earth Week, The Common Thread is serving as a central drop-off hub for community donations in partnership with The Scrappy Project and S.A.C.K. (Supporting A Community with Kindness).

Together, we’re turning handmade items and unused materials into something tangible for our community—supporting individuals experiencing homelessness and expanding access to creative resources.

S.A.C.K. provides handmade soap sacks filled with soap to those in need, offering access to hygiene in a simple, dignified way.

The Scrappy Project is a creative reuse center that keeps materials out of landfills and reinvests them into programs that teach knitting and crochet to underserved communities.

    Ways to Participate
    1. Join the Earth Day Stitch Social
    Wednesday, April 22
Drop in and stitch with us and Stacy from S.A.C.K. We’ll be making soap sacks using cotton yarn donated by The Scrappy Project.
Bring your needles or hook—we’ll have patterns and guidance ready.

    2. Come to Scrappy Hour (Friday Night)
Join our weekly stitch & sip and bring your donations with you.
✨ Bring a full Scrappy Bag of yarn
→ get a free Scrappy Hour ticket
Debra from The Scrappy Project will also be there collecting donations and hanging out with the community.

    3. Drop Off Anytime (All Week)
    April 21–26 during business hours
Stop by whenever it works for you—we’ll be collecting donations all week long.

    We are accepting:

    • 🧶 Unused yarn (we’ll provide Scrappy donation bags in-store)
    • 🧼 Full-size bars of soap (in original packaging)
    • 🧵 Handmade soap sacks

You can also download free soap sack patterns from S.A.C.K.’s website, make them at home, and drop them off anytime during the week.

    Cafe Perks
✨ Bring in a full Scrappy Bag of yarn OR 10 donated items (soap sacks and/or soap)
→ receive $5 off in the Common Thread café that day

    Where It Goes
All soap sacks (with soap) will be donated directly to a local organization doing on-the-ground work with our unhoused community.

Yarn donations go to The Scrappy Project, where they’re reused, resold, and help fund creative education programs for underserved communities.

Whether you stitch with us, donate, or just stop by, you’re part of it. We hope you'll join us to help stitch together a positive impact!
