Welcome to our monthly online accent modification class! I'm an nationally accredited speech-language pathologist based in Portland, Oregon who specializes in teaching American English pronunciation and professional communication skills to non-native English speakers for over 23 years.

This event is a great way to learn how to communicate more effectively and efficiently speaking American English.

In American English, we have a special category of vowel sounds called the "r-colored" or "r-influenced" vowel sounds. These are any vowel sounds that are followed by an /r/ within the same syllable. These sounds are VERY (I can't emphasize this enough) difficult to pronounce sounds by almost all non-native English speakers (including if you learned British English while growing up). They're also some of the sounds I work with my students on the most out of all of the sounds in American English.

We'll talk about how these sounds can be represented in spelling, what you need to do to make the sounds (how open your mouth should be, what you need to do with your lips, and what you need to do with your tongue) and we'll practice these sounds in words and sentences.

I'll provide as much 1:1 training as I can during the class. I'll also provide you with practice materials you can use at home and teach you the best way to practice to improve on your own.
