Dig It LA is for anyone who wants to trade screen time for sunshine, get their hands dirty, and do some tangible good in the city. No green thumb or experience required—just bring the good vibes.
We're all about low-key, high-impact hangouts. We'll pop up at community gardens and green spaces around LA that need a little love.
Our first mission: We're helping Good Earth Community Garden with an epic transformation THIS SATURDAY, August 9th.

This isn't just another Saturday morning—it's a chance to make a direct, visible impact in your community. LA Sanitation & Environment and Good Earth Community Garden are calling on our neighbors to help us with our most ambitious volunteer day of the year.
Our Mission: We need to rally 50 volunteers to prepare our shared space for a bountiful fall harvest. With your help, we can ensure the garden remains a vibrant, productive, and beautiful sanctuary for everyone.
Join us for a high-energy morning of teamwork, sunshine, and community building. Learn practical skills including weed removal, natural pest control, composting techniques, and seed planting—all while connecting with your local community.
Your Impact – What We'll Accomplish Together:
- Clear the Way for New Life: Tackle overgrown areas to prepare garden beds for planting.
- Build Our Garden's Future: Create and turn nutrient-rich compost that will feed our soil.
- Sow the Seeds of Change: Plant a new generation of cool-weather vegetables and flowers.
No Green Thumb Required! Whether you're a master gardener or have never touched a trowel in your life, we need your energy and enthusiasm. We will provide all the necessary tools, training, and guidance. This event is for ages 18 and over.
Event Day Schedule:
- 9:00 AM: Check-in, meet your fellow volunteers, quick welcome
- 9:05 AM: Training & demonstration of tasks.
- 9:30 AM: Let's get to work! We'll break into teams to tackle our goals.
- 12:00 PM: Tools down, wrap-up, and a huge thank you for your incredible work!
What to Bring:
- A full, reusable water bottle (we'll have a water refill station).
- Sunscreen and a hat to protect you from the sun.
- Comfortable clothes and sturdy, closed-toe shoes you don’t mind getting dirty.
- Gardening gloves
What We'll Provide:
- All necessary gardening tools.
- Expert guidance and instruction.
- A fun, positive, and rewarding atmosphere.
This goal is big, but our community is stronger. Your RSVP is essential so we can plan for the day and ensure we have enough tools for everyone. Let's do this!

- FREE Griffith Park Home Composting and Urban Gardening WorkshopGriffith Park Composting Education Facility, Los Ang, CA
This workshop will teach you how to turn kitchen scraps and yard trimmings into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Home composting is taught by a team of ten rotating LA Sanitation & Environment green waste specialists. Each participant will take home a free garden plant at the end of the event.
Compost bins ($20), Wing Digger aeration tools ($8), and worm bins ($20) are available to City of Los Angeles residents for purchase at these discounted rates, while supplies last. All locations accept checks and Griffith Park also accepts credit cards. All sales are final. Proof of City of Los Angeles residency is required such as a recent utility bill or a valid state-issued ID with your current home address.
Free mulch and compost are available for residential use. At Griffith Park, we offer free compost and mulch in bulk. Please bring your own shovel and container to take as much as you need for your residential gardening project.
Due to a road closure north of the facility, take Crystal Springs Drive to Griffith Park Drive. Please note that events may be cancelled in the event of severe inclement weather; if the workshop is cancelled we will notify you via email. We will also post cancellations to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
All registered City of Los Angeles residents who attend the workshop will be entered into a drawing to win a FREE rain barrel! Please note that if your household has received a rain barrel from the City of Los Angeles in the past 12 months, you are not eligible for the drawing. Registration is encouraged but not required.
