Mt. Pinos to the Boy Scout Camp in Lockwood Valley

Details

Saturday May 26th-Mt. Pinos parking lot to the Boy Scout Camp in Lockwood Valley. Hike length is 11 1/2 miles with 1250' elevation gain and 4000' elevation loss. I would rate http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/1/d/f/event_43649151.jpegthis hike as strenuous because of the amount of downhill and altitude. This point to point hike starts from the wooden Nordic hut by the Mt. Pinos parking lot. We will take a rest on the Wildlife Viewing Site at the top on Mt. Pinos. Continue on the trail until the turn off to Sawmill Mountain peak that has great views into the Pine Mountain community and surrounding mountains. Walk back and turn right onto the main trail until the fork to Sheep Camp. Turn left. In a short distance you will run into two mountain springs and a trail camp. This is Sheep Camp 4 1/2 miles from the start. After a short rest we will hike from Sheep Camp to Lilly Meadows Campsite. Along the way will be nice views and if we time it right a lot of http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/a/3/c/event_62811772.jpegwildflowers, so bring your camera. After taking a rest a Lilly Meadow follow the trail to a 50' waterfall. From here we will follow a fire road to the Boy Scout 3 Rivers camp and the end of our hike. Bring hat, sunblock, bug screen, lunch, snacks and 2 quarts of water. Hiking poles would be a great help if you have them. You must display your adventure pass to park at either location. There will need to be a 40 minute car shuttle from the Boy Scout Camp to the Mt. Pinos parking lot. Someone will need to pick Dave up at the Boy Scout Camp at 07:20 AM. Please contact Dave to volunteer. We should all meet up by 8AM at the wooden Nordic hut.

Directions to trailhead: Drive north on I-5 to the Frazier Park/Mt. Pinos exit. Exit. Turn left. Follow this road for about 18 miles to the end. (Do NOT take the right turn to Pine Mountain Club) Park in the lot. If you would like to carpool meet at Towsley Cyn at 6:30AM for a 6:40 AM departure. If you prefer to meet us at the trailhead, we will meet you there at 8:00 AM

Leader: Dave Pulsifer

Rated: Strenuous due to altitude and 4,000 foot drop
