The Advice Trap [Online]

We will explore how to listen without advising or diagnosing, which we often do automatically in a solution-oriented culture where we try meet our needs for contribution or peace by fast-forwarding through problems instead of sitting with valid human experiences. Recommended listening: Michael Bungay Stanier on The Advice Trap and Staying Curious Just a Little Longer (~1 hour)

Rules

1. 📷 Cameras must be turned on at the introduction and while speaking.
2. Speakers have the opportunity to share what's going on for them for up to 3 minutes. Sharing is optional.
3. Listeners (everyone else) take turns offering empathy guesses.
   ❤️ Ask: "Are you feeling X because you need Y?" Use the feelings and needs lists below.
   ❤️ Guess only 1 feeling and 1 need at a time. Keep it very brief.
   👎 Refrain from advising, 👎diagnosing, 👎 sympathizing, or 👎encouraging.
