New for 2025
"Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change." - Brene Brown
Toxic shame is a feeling of low self-worth, inadequacy and the belief that you are flawed or have done something wrong. It is at the very core of poor self-esteem and codependent tendencies. Shame is often rooted in painful childhood experiences and trauma and can prevent you from participating fully in life.
Tonight we will explore the exactly what shame is, the differences between shame and guilt and why shame can hold you back. More importantly, we'll discuss how to identify and conquer toxic shame in order to rebuild our self worth by discussing:
- learning the major characteristics of shame
- discussing shame-based reactions and how to handle them
- employing strategies to get though shame defenses like over-verbalization, dissociation, dishonesty and freezing
- making connections between how your trauma caused your shame
- recognizing your shame triggers
- identifying past experiences that have led to your shame
- utilizing cognitive restructuring techniques to reframe negative thoughts and more
Confronting and healing your shame without judgment is imperative in healing your trauma. Join us tonight as we explore this difficult emotion in detail. You do not have to be an established member to attend.
YOUR ORGANIZER: I am the daughter of a mother who enjoyed using shame to control. My mother was an expert in picking out what you were ashamed of and weaponizing it against you to purposely destroy your self worth, likely to establish a reliance on her. In the past 47 years, I've been trying to navigate life while carrying around toxic shame that's existed since my childhood and in the past few years, through work with this group, have been able to navigate life through a new lens thanks to therapeutic and somatic work. I run the C-PTSD Weekly Group and this is a topic that has been addressed frequently. I look forward to learning along with you how we can move forward without toxic shame ruling our lives.
COST: $20.00 non refundable fee to be paid at registration. You will receive copies of the slides for review.
